An hour later Daddy and I are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Abigail Marksberry. Well, actually I’m peeking out the window and wringing my hands, and Daddy’s relaxed on the sofa reading the newspaper. Finally, he looks over his reading glasses at me and says, “Girlie, you need to sit down and just chill as you call it.”

“You’re right, but I keep thinkin’ I’ll be like Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries.” I remember the dinner party scene and cringe. Note to self, don’t put your name card next to a candle. Of course, I’m not a princess, but then again the way life has been going lately, I don’t discount anything.

“Who and what?”

“Nothin’. Ohmigod, here she comes!” I glance over my shoulder at Daddy and then back out the window. With a grimace I tug on my T-shirt and smooth my palms over my jeans. I wish I had worn something a bit nicer, but the problem is I don’t have anything nicer. The shirt is a plain pale blue, free of any beer logos or anything, and my jeans are without holes, but even that was hard to find in my giant closet chock-full of nothing to wear. This is why she’s coming here, I firmly remind myself. Just let her work her magic.

“Does she have a bun on top of her head and a big wart on the end of her nose?” Daddy jokes and doesn’t look apprehensive in the least. In fact, he appears a little amused by this whole scenario.

When Abigail Marksberry parks her white sedan in the circular driveway, I turn to Daddy and shrug. “Well, let’s see . . . We’ll soon find out.”

“Give me fair warning.”

“Okay. Oh, wow.” Although she’s wearing a conservative, light green summer suit, she swings shapely legs from her car. Instead of being gathered in a bun, her deep auburn hair is cut in a sleek bob angling slightly toward her chin. She’s tall and graceful and I know she’s close to fifty, but she sure doesn’t look it.

“Was that a good wow or a we’re-in-for-it wow?”

“Well . . .” I hide my grin and finish, “I’ll let you decide.

The sun glints off lighter red highlights as she walks toward the front door. When she gets closer I notice that her face is attractive and she appears nice.

Of course, appearances are sometimes misleading, so I could be way off the mark in the friendly department. She might be as mean as a wet old hen. When she rings the doorbell I glance back at Daddy, who smiles and gives me an encouraging nod. He too is fresh out of the shower and putting his best foot forward. While Daddy might be a little rough around the edges, he’s fit and trim and I must say handsome in a blond-haired, blue-eyed John Schneider kind of way. Even with the heartache he’s had to endure he’s managed to hold up pretty darned well, if I do say so myself.
